Inductive Loop Vehicle Detector

1.The inductive loop coil

The inductive loop is simply a coil of insulated copper wire (building wire) that is routed in the road if the vehicle passes directly over it. Coils are usually used with multiple turns, and the ends of the coil are usually left long enough to reach the position of the vehicle loop detector module without connecting the cable.

In the existing pavement that needs to be installed, the loop line usually installs the loop coil by cutting a narrow groove on the road surface with a concrete cutter, winding the loop conductor into the groove and filling the groove with asphalt or epoxy to exclude the groove. Any water and prevent any moving conductors. In new roads, the coils can be constructed of PVC pipes and buried in wet concrete during casting.

The characteristics of the inductive loop determine the effectiveness (sensitivity) of the loop in detecting the passage of vehicles above it. These characteristics relate to the size, shape, and number of turns of wire and are detailed below.

2. The Vehicle Loop Detector

The vehicle loop detector is an affordable electronic module housed in a small enclosure with input and output electrical connections. It requires a protective housing and is powered by either mains voltage or low voltage AC/DC power, depending on the model.

The detector energizes the inductive loop with an AC signal, creating a magnetic field around the loop conductors. 3. Sensing Loop Geometry

For optimal performance, sensing loops should generally be rectangular, with the longest sides perpendicular to the traffic direction. Ideal spacing for these sides is 1-2 meters apart. Note that smaller loops can restrict detection height, causing issues with high-bed vehicles and some SUVs.

Loop Length and Wire Turns:

  • Width of Roadway: The loop should extend to within 300mm of each roadway edge.
  • Turns of Wire:
    • Loops > 10 meters in circumference: Use two turns of wire.
    • Loops < 10 meters in circumference: Use three or more turns.
    • Loops < 6 meters in circumference: Use four turns.
    • For adjacent loops, alternate between three and four turns to ensure reliability.
